Trane air conditioners are available today in a wide selection and are the unlikely result of Reuben Trane and his son James Incorporating the Trane Company in 1913 as a plumbing firm. Their foray into plumbing was short lived, as the Tranes pursued the manufacturing of heating products by 1916. In 1925, they were successful in creating a the first convection-based radiator designed to replace the then ubiquitous cast-iron radiators which were heavy and oversized. Soon after in 1931 the father-son duo produced thier first air conditioning unit.

Trane was acquired by American Standard Inc. in 1984. American Standard subsequently broke up into three divisions in 2007. It spun off the WABCO Vehicle Control Systems division and sold its kitchen and bath division to Bain Capital Partners, LLC.

As part of the deal, Bain Capital would own the rights to the American Standard brand name. The American Standard Corporation retained the Trane Company HVAC division, and finally renamed the company Trane Inc. later that year and began selling branded Trane Air Conditioners. Today offer a wide array of Trane air conditioners, from both inexpensive and basic to higher end sophisticated units utilizing dual compressors for top efficiency.
